Take Your Vitamins - Read!

May 26, 2014

Almost everyone says they believe reading is good for children, but at the same time, it's often presented as something akin to medicine - read these books to get a good grade. Take them, they're good for you! But now comes word that reading for fun improves children's brain and led to greater success in life.

Lest you think this was another study of dubious methods, the researchers studied the results of 6,000 children from the same social backgrounds who were tested at ages five, ten and sixteen. They found that those who frequently read books at age 10 and 16 had higher test results in vocabulary, spelling and mathematics. In fact, the impact was around four times greater than that of having a parent with a post-secondary degree.

And this was reading for FUN, folks. The study didn't look at books read during class assignments. Unfortunately, other studies indicate today's youth are reading less than previous generations. This is a worrisome trend.
